I've been death-leveling for the past 19 hours and it has been uninterrupted. This must only affect present farmers in the big towns.

my highest ever ping 15,000 when on wireless on low signal.

Game ran perfectly, before the presents came.
However, my brother, who was on a lower district, was completely uneffected by this.

Totally unacceptable. I had 3 presents and a hat before I could log in again and now they are gone. Its like I was never in the event, I also lost the shards I won.
They rolled back my character, bugger that.

Waited over an hour this morning (08:00 AM) in Lions Arch, and the Wintersday Grand Finale didn't run at all.
Tried again in Kamadan (11:00 AM). Event started and did manage to get a hat and a few presents before major lag and disconnect.
When i was able to login again, hat and presents were gone.
Dont know if theres any point to try a third time?

I was waiting in a district(27) from the before the start of the event. With nothing happening after waiting for 15 or so minutes we suddenly found ourselves in another district,5 I think. I don't see the relevance of the statement. The problem seems to be europe wide though

Minor advices for the next events you'll attend: remind people that stopping displaying minipets can ease the situation; avoid spamming commands, I used "; space" calmly during the mega-lag and got my 32 gifts even if it was hyper slow (you just have to wait patiently when the screen does not update).

The more we load the servers, the more we make everyone's problem worse and this gets back at us, because we all share the same servers.

I doubt 20 minipets would affect it that much, I'd hazard a guess that the particle effect (or whatever it is) on the presents is a much heavier load.

When I got to Kamadan it was 14 mins past the hour and the district was nearly full of people and the event didnt happen at all. There were some poeple there that said they had been there since about 5 past the hour. So the district was definately there when the event should have started in kamadan at 15 mins past the hour.

I was trying to pick up presents slowly just using next item and space but at a ping of 143k there's not much you can do. I then logged out (wasn't kicked) and when I got back on my presents that I had managed to get were gone and so was the hat.

It simply is a matter of scale: 20 minipets means 20 basic AI to activate and allocate resources for them. It may not be great, but it's load to remove from the server. Any load removed is good! (during the event, I avoid speaking in chats, except for answering questions)

Same thing can be said of the nice PvP emotes, sparklers and other graphical bonuses. We should even all be naked

I didn't have to wait too much and got a good 32 gifts (even collected one after the event was finished).

And the reason why I replied this way to your message is to try to show you that my advice was a general one. It's impossible to understand everyone's situation, but it's possible to stop looking only at my own situation.

Well yes, but as the lag spikes didn't get serious until after the presents started dropping (in Euro Eng Districts 1 and 5 at 8am and 11am respectively) I think it's fair to say they're the main culprit, yes?

So instead of dropping them on the floor - simple solution: drop them straight into your inventory instead.

The only negative aspect of that is that it prevents people from nabbing unassigned presents left lying around by AFKers, and removes a bit of the ambience of having gifts rain from the sky.

Personally I haven't experienced anything as extreme as some describe here.

No, probably not. If you know how a server works, you'd understand that the problem may not be due to one very specific activity. If you load the server before the event, with 20 minis, lots of graphical this and that, then there's going to be a problem when suddenly the server has to generate about a hundred gifts.

I'm NOT saying it's the main culprit, I'm just saying it COULD help.

Have no problem with that. Some will say we're lazy.

Agree too, I would prefer it to stay that way. I wonder whether last year's event had the same problem, maybe someone remembers?

Or they could remove non essential wandering NPCs. You know that people would just gripe if they couldn't release 20 mini pets. Enough people already gripe if the limits been hit already.

Last years event had the problem that presents in Kamadan landed on the two ledges behind the rings. People couldn't retrieve them unless they got killed by the Grentches very close to them and re-spawned on the ledge. As such by the end of the day some districts had hundreds of them sitting up there sparkling away to their hearts content. Eventually someone from Anet spawned up there and picked them up.

They seem to have avoided that this year from what I've seen so far.

Servers are not affected by "graphical this and that", 100 gifts could be as little as what, 1k of memory? Possibly less. Laughable load.

Server does not have to care about gprahical apparance of item, client is there to do that. Having them compute particle effects and stuff like that would mean pretty bad programing (and waste of BW).

I was obviously talking about the graphics management, not the mesh and textures which are in your Gw.dat (though it's not obvious that ALL is there). With all the clutering and all people in the center ring, the server has to check a few things I guess.

Another problem being that GW districts are not servers, but probably virtual servers (and one or two hundreds of them if I'm not mistaken), which means that virtual memory swapping becomes a HUGE pain in case of physical and virtual load. Of course, I'm NOT Anet and could be very mistaken about what's happening.

I'm not trying to be smart here, rather useful (I'll even be happy to know the truth and admit I was wrong). So if you have a better idea, please state it!
